You’d have thought Mini would be chuffed to bits that its new Countryman rally car has picked up its first win already. Only it’s not. Damned privateers, they have to go and rain on the parade of the official WRC team’s launch next week by going and winning first, eh?
You see, this is the car Mini wants us to be talking about – the ‘works’ Cooper Works WRC. That pesky one that won last weekend – crewed by Italians Andrea Navarra and Simona Fedeli – is a privately entered S2000 car and, as explained by a PR man through gritted teeth, not part of the official rally programme or headline WRC ambitions. Those impertinent privateers, how dare they!
Mini is playing down the burden of expectation its return to rallying inevitably brings – check out the tongue in cheek reasons for not attending all the WRC rounds on the main Mini Motorsport site below.
But the pressure on drivers Meeke and Sordo can only be piling up with this welcome and yet simultaneously awkward first victory.
Chin up chaps!
